The explanation says: The objective realm of meditative concentration can cause the continuity of wholesome dharmas, hence it is called 'real referent'. Alternatively, it is called 'real' to exclude the imagined realm. The formal proof is formulated: The realm manifested by meditative concentration is empty and not truly existent; because it manifests dependent on clear conditions; just like the moon in the water. [The sūtra says:] 'Furthermore, it is like an apparition: spoken of as an apparition dependent on this apparition. Although it is without reality, the magician is without distortion and diligently applies effort toward the conjured entity. Bodhisattvas are also like this: although there are no imagined sentient beings, out of compassion toward sentient beings that are dependently originated, they proceed to those various places of birth and take on a self-existence.'
