The Commentary says: This is the fourth point. If the wardens and the like are subsumed under the narakas, they should themselves be unable to endure the suffering of being constantly burned by the iron ground. Since they cannot endure it, how could they harm other evil-doers in that place? Evil-doers of that destiny cannot endure the suffering and cannot harm others; these are also of that destiny, so they should themselves be unable to endure that suffering and unable to harm others. The inference runs: "Those wardens and the like should themselves be unable to endure the suffering of being constantly burned by the fiercely blazing flames of the burning iron ground; because they are accepted to be subsumed under the narakas; like the other evil-doers." If [it is argued that] the wardens and the like cannot endure suffering and thus this inference has the fault of proving what is already accepted (siddhasādhana), one should further establish the inference: "Those wardens and the like should be unable to harm other evil-doers; because they themselves cannot endure the hot iron ground and the like; like the other evil-doers." "How could they torment others there?" also concludes the previous three objections. In the Kośa, chapter eleven, they again rescue by saying: "Because they are shielded by the power of karma, or because they produce distinct great elements, they are not burned." Since these wardens and the like created karma the same as other sufferers of retribution, why solely through karma should the fire not burn and harm them?
