There was a very wealthy householder named Upāli who served the Nirgrantha Jñātiputra, who dispatched him to go and refute the position established by the Buddha. Dīrgha-tapasvin informed him: "This matter cannot be done. That Gautama's appearance and eloquence surpass ordinary people immeasurably; moreover, he possesses magical arts and can transform people's minds. Countless sentient beings have become his disciples; how could he possibly be subdued?" Jñātiputra did not believe it and made the householder go. After the householder went, he wished to refute the Buddha's position. He then posited the thesis: "I establish three punishments: bodily is the paramount, next verbal, and last mental. Why does Gautama say that mental punishment is the heaviest?" At that time, the World-Honoured One was in the country of Mithilā; it took five days to walk along just one side of the kingdom's city walls.
