As for "Kaliṅga", this is translated as "harmonious and graceful", like the name of that bird. The character líng is pronounced in the falling tone. An older [text] says: the name of the ascetic Mātaṅga. Formerly, someone said to this ascetic: "If you have a son, he will become the royal preceptor." Mātaṅga belonged to the caṇḍāla caste. Having heard this, he sought a girl from the king. The king rebuked him severely: "You are not of good caste; why do you seek marriage with me?" When the ascetic sought repeatedly without success, the daughter wished to go to the ascetic's place. She had her mother tell the king: "Though he is of low caste, he is still an ascetic and deeply worthy of respect; my heart wishes to marry him." The king firmly refused. The daughter went to him secretly and became the ascetic's wife, subsequently giving birth to a son. Having lost his daughter, the king searched everywhere. Finding the ascetic's place, he dispatched caṇḍālas to bind the ascetic and the daughter together and throw them into the Ganges. The ascetic said to the deity of the Ganges: "Do not submerge me; if I am submerged, in an instant I will cause the water to dry up completely." The river deity thereupon severed the ropes and let the ascetic go free. In anger, the ascetic formed an intention, and in an instant it rained stones; the king and his people all died, and the kingdom turned into a mountain forest, named Mātanga after its origin. These three ancient kingdoms have now turned into forests. The Buddha asked Upāli: "Do you know for what reason these forests became empty and desolate?"
