2.32

Commentary: Below is the specific refutation. You say that atoms, each individually, are the objects of the five consciousnesses; this is definitely not so. Because atoms individually cannot be apprehended by the five consciousnesses such as the eye. Moreover, in your own school, the eyes of ordinary beings and the like do not see atoms, and their aspect does not appear on the five consciousnesses; how can you say that atoms individually are the object? An inference should be established thus: 'Individual atoms are not the object of the five consciousnesses (pratijñā); because they cannot be apprehended by the five consciousnesses such as the eye (hetu); like the eye faculty and so forth (dṛṣṭānta).' Therefore, in this treatise, 'atoms individually' is merely the subject (pakṣa), and 'because they cannot be apprehended' is merely the reason (hetu), while the similar example and the thesis to be proved are omitted; or the inference should run: 'The numerous atoms in aggregate form are not the object of the five consciousnesses (pratijñā); because atoms individually are not apprehended by the five consciousnesses (hetu); like the eye faculty and so forth (dṛṣṭānta).'
