Commentary: This explains why they are not conceivable by oneself. 'Discursive thought' (vitarka) refers to conceptual, contaminated minds and the like, or the four investigations (paryeṣaṇā). As for the principles of vijñapti-mātra, only when one attains awakening through uncontaminated true wisdom can one partially realize them. In the stage of a Buddha, the realization is fully luminous. However, I, Vasubandhu, reside prior to the bhūmis, abiding in the stage of discursive thought, and cannot truly realize the principles of vijñapti-mātra as they are; therefore they are not what I can conceive. The principles of vijñapti-mātra transcend the sphere of discursive thought. The above generally explains the word 'inconceivable' in the verse.
