「第四、重數分別者，眼等五識及與末那，有其三重：謂種子為一重，現行為第二重，第六意識緣為第三重。第六意識有三重：種子為一重，現行為第二重，前後相緣為第三重。阿賴耶識有四重：謂種子為一重，現行為第二重，第六意識緣為第三重，末那緣為第四重。

"Fourth, regarding the distinction of the layers: the five consciousnesses such as the cakṣur-vijñāna and the manas have three layers: namely, seeds are the first layer, active manifestation is the second layer, and being cognized by the sixth mano-vijñāna is the third layer. The sixth mano-vijñāna has three layers: seeds are the first layer, active manifestation is the second layer, and earlier and later cognizing each other is the third layer. The ālaya-vijñāna has four layers: namely, seeds are the first layer, active manifestation is the second layer, being cognized by the sixth mano-vijñāna is the third layer, and being cognized by the manas is the fourth layer.
