First, within distinguishing the characteristics: since it is said that they are like the sands of the Ganges and cannot be exhaustively spoken of, ten kinds are briefly raised. As the Awakening of Faith says: "The essence and characteristics of tathatā from the very beginning are intrinsically replete with all merits, namely: because it has the meaning of the great light of wisdom in its very substance; because it has the meaning of universally illuminating the dharmadhātu; because it has the meaning of true cognition; because it has the meaning of the intrinsically pure mind; because it has the meaning of permanence, bliss, self, and purity; because it has the meaning of being cool, unchanging, and sovereign; being replete with inconceivable Buddha-dharmas more numerous than the sands of the Ganges such as these, which are neither separated nor severed, neither different nor inconceivable, down to being complete without lacking anything—for this reason it is called the tathāgatagarbha and is also called the tathāgata's dharmakāya." The explanation says: Among the merits of the six clauses above, the fourth clause of the fifth contains four merits, the sixth clause contains two merits, and the remaining four each contain one; therefore, there are ten kinds.
