Third, in the matching of phenomena below 'Śāriputra', first is an overarching explanation. That is, according to the Sanskrit text, it says: 'The dharmakāya is not separated from the qualities of all buddhas, and is not free of the virtues of wisdom.' This has two meanings: first, it clarifies that the buddha-dharmas, [countless as] the sands of the Ganges, are not separated from the dharmakāya; second, it clarifies that the dharmakāya is merely free of all obscurations, but not free of the virtues of wisdom. Alternatively explained: because these virtues and so forth are free from the signs of apprehended objects (grāhya) but are not separated from the dharmakāya, it is said to be 'not separated'; because they are free from grasping by the apprehending subject (grāhaka) but are not free from the dharmakāya, it is said to be 'not free'. The rest is the same as the prior explanation. Next, the words below 'that is to say' specifically reveal the meaning of the great wisdom light and so forth of the pure virtues [as numerous as] the sands of the Ganges, using them to contrast the defiled dharmas [as numerous as] the sands of the Ganges to illustrate the virtues [as numerous as] the sands of the Ganges. The explanation of the first verse is finished.
