Question: 'If the reason of the eighth statement is subsumed under valid reasons, there is a contradiction by inference (anumāna-bādha): the eighth statement is not subsumed under valid reasons, because of having both [presence and absence] in the sapakṣa, like the seventh and ninth.' Answer: 'This [objection] suffers from a counterbalanced contradiction (satpratipakṣa / virodhadhimanta). The inference runs: The reason of the eighth statement is subsumed under valid reasons, because of possessing the three characteristics among the nine statements' reasons, like the second statement. If one does not say "among the nine statements" and merely says "possessing the three characteristics", one fears the fault of inconclusiveness: Is it like the second statement possessing the three characteristics, so that this eighth statement is subsumed under valid reasons? Or is it like a counterbalanced contradiction possessing the three characteristics, so that this eighth statement is not subsumed under valid reasons? Therefore, by saying "among the nine statements", it is free from this fault. Alternatively, a counterbalanced contradiction does not possess the three characteristics, because another's cognition is not definitively determined.'
