Second, intrinsic nature is also called the subject (dharmin), and specific property is also called the attribute (dharma). "Dharma" has two senses: first, being able to maintain its own entity; second, being a model that generates an understanding in others. Therefore, various treatises say: "A dharma means model and maintenance." The former, maintaining its own entity, applies to all things universally; the latter, being a model that generates understanding, must involve qualification. What is stated first has not been spoken of previously; extending straightforwardly, it maintains its entity, without qualification to generate a different understanding in others. What is stated later has already been spoken of previously; one can use the later statement to distinguish what was stated before, only then having the qualification to generate a different understanding in others. The generation of that different understanding depends solely on the later statement. Therefore, what is stated first possesses only one sense—being able to maintain its own entity—and its meaning is not preeminent, so it does not obtain the name dharma. What is stated later is complete with both senses, being able both to maintain and to serve as a model; because its meaning is preeminent, it alone receives the name dharma. What is stated first can possess the subsequent dharma, so it is further called "the possessor of the dharma" (dharmin, the subject).
