Commentary: The first clause is the pratijñā, the next clause the hetu, the next clause the opponent, and the final clause concludes [the fallacy]. For example, when a Vaiśeṣika proves to a Sautrāntika the pratijñā "Space is a real entity" with the hetu "because it is the substratum of qualities." Any property (dharma) or subject (dharmin) must be mutually established and need no further proof for the pratijñā to be established. How much more so for all reasons, which are the property-nature of the subject in the pratijñā! By designating space as a real entity, the subject is already unestablished; when one further states the reason, upon what does the reason stand? Therefore, against those who maintain that space is non-existent, the reason's substratum is unestablished (āśrayāsiddha).
