At the beginning of the cosmic epoch of formation (vivartakalpa), a non-Buddhist appeared named Kapila, which translates as the 'yellow-red rishi,' because his beard, hair, and facial complexion were all yellow-red. The ancient rendering 'Kāpila rishi' was an error. Among his later disciples, the foremost of the eighteen schools was named Varṣa, which means 'rain,' because he was born during the rainy season. That rain-lineage was called the 'Rain Host' (Vārṣagaṇya). In Sanskrit it is Sāṃkhya-śāstra, which here means 'enumeration treatise': that is, using wisdom repeatedly to measure all phenomena, the treatise arises from enumeration, and the treatise can generate enumeration, so it is again called Sāṃkhya. Those who study Sāṃkhya and those who composed it are called Sāṃkhya masters. They teach twenty-five principles (tattvas), which are briefly three, moderately four, and broadly twenty-five principles.
