Question: "Under which clauses among the nine clauses [of the wheel of reasons] are the four contradictory reasons subsumed?" Answer: "At first glance at the trend of the text, only the first contradiction is the fourth and sixth among the nine clauses, possessing both reasons, because two reasons among the nine contradict the reason contradicting the property's svabhāva. Now observing the latter three, all are the fourth clause, because they are absent from the sapakṣa and present in the vipakṣa, contradicting what is to be established. What has been discussed above are only the four contradictory reasons of both parties unproved (ubhaya-asiddha); there are also the four contradictory reasons of any-one unproved (anyatara-asiddha), doubtful unproved (saṃdigdha-asiddha), and unproved locus (āśraya-asiddha). Among the thirty-six, each has four, totaling one hundred and forty-four contradictory reasons. As quoted from the Nyāyamukha under inconclusive reasons, all should be reflected upon; fearing that the text would become complex, they are briefly omitted. However, the Nyāyamukha summarizes this in a verse: 'Perversely proving the property or the subject, / Their intrinsic nature or their distinction, / This constitutes a contradictory reason, / If there is no sublation.'"
