3.98

古破他救云：聲無礙有遮有表，喻遮非表，喻不似因，亦不反成，云如咽等所作，杖等所作雖不相似，所作義同，亦得成喻者。此亦不爾，同有所作，即遮、表同，故得為因。彼遮無表，不與此例。

An ancient master refuting another's defense said: Sound being unobstructed has exclusion and affirmation, whereas the example has exclusion and not affirmation; the example does not resemble the reason, nor does it establish by contrast. If one says that just as what is produced by the throat etc. and what is produced by a staff etc. do not resemble each other, yet their meaning of being produced is the same, so they can still form an example—this is also not so. Sharing in being produced means exclusion and affirmation are identical, and therefore it can serve as a reason. That [case] having exclusion without affirmation cannot be analogized to this.
