Below, the second part is the direct explanation of the chapter headings. Herein there are two: first, explaining the chapter heading of "Dharma"; second, explaining the chapter heading of "significance." The first has two parts: first, the direct explanation; second, from "Why is this?" downward, the further explanation. The first part has three clauses: first, revealing the essence of the Dharma; second, from "this mind" downward, clarifying its function; third, from "relying on this" downward, clarifying the intention of establishing the doctrine. "What is called Dharma" resumes the previous chapter heading. As for "the mind of sentient beings": because they take birth according to dharmas, they are called "sentient beings." This is with respect to ordinary beings. If spoken of generally, the coming together of many dharmas to arise is called "sentient beings." This applies universally to the noble ones as well. "Mind" refers to the mental dharma, selected among the three aggregates of dharmas by excluding form and non-manifesting [action]. This mind is precisely the reality within sentient beings, and is therefore called the true mind.
