From here below, the second [topic] clarifies the essence of delusive dharmas. In this there are two: first, the direct explanation; second, from "If one is free from the mind's thoughts" below, the reverse explanation. "All dharmas": the delusive dharmas of saṃsāra are not one, hence they are called "all"; although they are illusory, they are not non-existent, hence they are called "dharmas." "Are differentiated solely depending on deluded thoughts": avidyā constitutes the deluded thoughts. Because of the presence of avidyā obscuring tathatā, there is arising and ceasing, like flowers in the sky: existing because of eye disease, yet absent once the eyes are cured. Sentient beings are like this: because of the cataract of avidyā, there is arising and ceasing; falsely conceiving what is non-existent as existent, they give rise to manifold karmas and undergo manifold sufferings. If, through practice arising, [one uses] the gold needle of conditioned wisdom to remove that cataract of the eye, one then realizes delusion is non-existent and opens up in realization to unite with the true. Therefore Master Zhao said: "The reason why sentient beings revolve in saṃsāra is entirely because they cling to desires. If desires cease in the mind, there will be no more saṃsāra." From here below is the reverse explanation. "If one is free from the mind's thoughts": the seven consciousnesses constitute the mind's thoughts. "Then there are no characteristics of any perceptual objects": these are the perceptual objects of saṃsāra. Because there are deluded thoughts, there are deluded objects; if there are no deluded thoughts, whence could the deluded objects of saṃsāra arise? Therefore the text below states: "When the mind arises, dharmas arise; when the mind ceases, dharmas cease. The three realms are illusory, made solely by the one mind."
