The Treatise: "Emerged from the afflictive..." and below is the second, directly distinguishing [it]. The Commentary says: "Coarse and subtle defiled minds" are the four coarse and three subtle [marks], as the text below says: "The meaning of defiled mind is called the affliction hindrance." "The ignorance on which it relies": the fundamental and the branch are the dharmas on which the six defilements rely, as the text below says: "The meaning of ignorance is called the knowledge hindrance." "The pure mind emerges from hindrances" means emerging from the preceding two hindrances; an obstruction is a hindrance. The two hindrances having emerged, the karmic consciousness and so forth perish, and the mind has nothing with which to unite, hence it is said to be "free." The three sections of the Commentary on "free from union" and so forth overturn the preceding union, afflictions, and knowledge hindrance to form these three words: "pure," "purified," and "luminous," as can be known from the Commentary. However, among these three words, the word "pure" (chún) is the general, while "purified" (jìng) and "luminous" (míng) are the specific, meaning purely purified and purely luminous. Purely purified is the meaning of complete purity, distinguished from the partial purity of bodhisattvas and others. Purely luminous is the meaning of complete enlightenment, distinguished from the partial enlightenment of bodhisattvas and others. Thus, because the six defilements are exhausted, it is called purely purified; because the two enlightenments are perfected, it is called purely luminous. Moreover, these three words are precisely the complete three virtues, which respectively are the dharmakāya, liberation, and prajñā, possessing these three dots to constitute the great parinirvāṇa.
