In the first [mark], Treatise: 'Depending on the objective realm...' This is merely pulled into arising externally by the condition of the objective realm, and generated internally from the faculties; hence it says 'the mind arises.' Commentary: 'Regarding the preceding...' Not knowing it is generated internally, one takes it to come from outside. The *Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra* says: 'Externally there is truly no form; it is only the manifestation of one's own mind. Foolish people do not realize this, falsely differentiating conditioned phenomena. Not knowing that various external realms are all one's own mind, the wise fully comprehend that the realms are manifestations of one's own mind.' 'Initially arising...' Following the principal mind, mental factors further arise, selecting and discriminating between defiled and pure, determining them to be thus; therefore it is named cognition. Its essence is the mental factor of wisdom among the mental factors of specific objects; hence it is called 'the factor of wisdom.'
