In the sixth [mark], Commentary: 'Incurring fruition is inevitable' means that it is definitely so. There are two meanings here: first, one cannot but receive it; second, wholesome [karma] does not lead to suffering, and unwholesome [karma] does not lead to pleasure. The *Classic of Documents* states: 'Calamities sent by Heaven may still be avoided; calamities incurred by oneself cannot be escaped.' The *Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra* says: 'Neither in the sky nor in the sea, nor entering between mountain rocks—there is no place where one can escape and not receive retribution.' Hence it says 'inevitable.' Cycling in the three realms without a time of cessation is called 'circulating.' Dying here and being born there without being able to escape is called 'long-bound.' Like an ant walking in a circle, like a silkworm spinning a cocoon, ending and beginning again, without autonomy. The *Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra* says: 'Like a bird tied with a string, though it flies far, when pulled it returns. Living beings pulled by karma, know that it is also like this.' If not awakened, there is no time of liberation. Speaking now in this sense, it says 'long-bound.'
