12.15

論　非凡下，依位別歎，三：一、凡小非分。疏　凡小非分等者，凡夫尚不知意之識，況此三細耶？二乘方覺事識中麁分，尚不覺細分，正認三細以為涅槃，以是無明所起之識，非其境界也。於五住地中但覺前四，是前見愛所增長識也。若根本無明是第五住，非彼所覺。

The Śāstra states: "Not ordinary beings..." Below, specifically praising according to the stages, which has three parts: first, not being within the capacity of ordinary beings and Hinayāna followers. Commentary: "Not being within the capacity of ordinary beings and Hinayāna followers" and so on: ordinary beings do not even know the consciousness of the mental faculty, how much less these three subtle marks? Those of the two vehicles only become aware of the coarse division in the consciousness of phenomena, and do not yet become aware of the subtle division; they mistake the three subtle marks for nirvāṇa. Because these are consciousnesses arisen from avidyā, they are not their realm. Among the five stages of entrenchment, they are only aware of the first four, which are the consciousnesses increased and grown by the previous views and attachments. As for fundamental avidyā, it is the fifth entrenchment, not what they can be aware of.
