As for the manifestation of deviating concentration: either the body and hands move erratically, or the body feels heavy as if weighed down by an object, or the body feels light as if wanting to fly, or one falls into deep slumber, or one experiences scorching cold or fierce fever and sees various strange realms, or the mind is dark and obstructed, or various evil awarenesses arise, or one thinks of external scattered virtues, or one becomes excitedly agitated with joy, or one has sorrowful and weeping thoughts, or evil awareness touches the body so that the bodily hair stands on end, or at times there is great pleasure and intoxicated stupor. Such various deviating phenomena arising together with dhyāna are called deviating and counterfeit. If one craves and is attached to this deviating concentration, it corresponds to the ninety-five kinds of ghost and spirit methods, and one frequently tends to lose one's mind in madness. Or various ghosts and spirits, knowing that the person craves and is attached to their dharma, will add power, causing various deep deviating concentrations, wisdom, eloquence, and supernormal powers to arise, moving worldly people. Those who see it assume they have attained the fruit of the path and all submit in faith, while internally their minds are inverted, exclusively practicing ghost methods. When this person's life ends, if they do not meet the protection of a Buddha or a good friend, they fall back into the path of ghosts and spirits. If they are reborn again and practice many evil dharmas, they fall into hell. When practitioners cultivate calming and contemplation, if they realize such dhyānas and have these various deviating and counterfeit marks, they should cast them away. If they know them to be empty and deceptive and do not crave or attach to them, they will fade and perish. If thoughts of attachment arise, they fall among the deviating.
