Under the contemplation of suffering, the Śāstra says: "All mental activities, etc.": as stated in the sūtras, in a single thought-moment there are ninety kṣaṇas, and within one kṣaṇa there are nine hundred arisings and ceasings. Since they arise rapidly and cease rapidly, this is truly suffering. Therefore it was said earlier: "If there is movement, there is suffering; the fruit is not separate from the cause." Now, "suffering" has the meaning of affliction; the five sufferings and eight sufferings are manifold and varied, but speaking in brief they do not go beyond three kinds, namely the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioned existence. Among the three sufferings, the suffering of conditioned existence is the most universal; not only do the five destinies all have it, but the three vehicles also all possess it. Now, taking the universal meaning, only one is indicated.
