The Commentary states: 'This is…' and so forth is eliminating confusion. The harmonization of non-arising and non-ceasing with arising and ceasing refers to the real turning in accordance with the deluded, which is the gate of transmigration—namely, the meaning of turning away from enlightenment to merge with the dust of defilement. 'It is not…' and so forth refers to resting delusion to return to the real, which is the gate of return to cessation—namely, the meaning of extinguishing dust to merge with enlightenment. However, in these two, in conforming harmonization the essence is concealed and the marks manifest; in reversing harmonization the marks disappear and the essence is revealed. Therefore the preceding gate states: 'Because all dharmas are completely real, they are all identical to tathatā.' This is reversing harmonization. This present gate states: 'In reliance on the tathāgatagarbha, there is the mind of arising and ceasing.' And it further states: 'Delusion relies on enlightenment', and so forth. This is conforming harmonization. For this reason, the former meaning in the Commentary is the arising and ceasing gate, and the latter meaning is the tathatā gate.
