Regarding the treatise's "in reliance upon this" and what follows: this establishes the name in reliance upon the essence. It means that the mind-essence is quiescent and free from alteration. Because it has been a norm [to follow] from the very beginning, it is named "dharma"; and because it is that which the essence relies upon and aggregates, it is named "body" (kāya). Now, establishing the name "enlightenment" in reliance upon this essence serves to show that the dharmakāya is not merely a frozen quiescence devoid of knowing and awareness. It also reveals that this enlightenment is not a conditioned, arising-and-ceasing dharma; hence it is established with reference to the dharmakāya. Thus, upon a single essence, because of quiescence it is named dharmakāya, and because of illumination it is named original enlightenment. What is called "relying" is merely the sense of relying on or taking reference to; it is not like the sprouts of plants and trees that rely on roots, dividing into subject and object. Nor is it like relying on the tathāgatagarbha to have the arising-and-ceasing mind, which divides into the real and the false. This is a single real essence; it is merely with reference to the sense of spiritual illumination upon this essence that it is conveniently named original enlightenment.
