The functions of the three subtle marks are because the eighth consciousness is able to gather seeds and give rise to active manifestations. The functions of the latter two are divided into two distinct aspects solely in terms of uninterrupted conceptual differentiation. Hence the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: "The mental consciousness cognizes the objects of the three times," etc., which is precisely this meaning.
