Establishing the name. In the Commentary, "This Śāstra..." and so forth: this means that within the single consciousness of the manas, the five consciousnesses of the eye and the rest are divided, which together with the root make six, to correspond to the six sensory objects. However, the preceding continuing consciousness and cognitive consciousness also conditioned the six sensory objects; because they were not associated with attachment and views, they belonged to the preceding manas. Therefore it was said earlier: "The six coarse marks belong to the mental consciousness." In "relying on the six sense faculties..." and so forth: relying on the internal six sense faculties, the six consciousnesses are emitted, which condition the external six sensory objects. This means that the aggregated conditions stir within and rush outwards. Since the one is taken as six, this has the meaning of separation. As the Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: "Originally relying on one pure brightness, it is divided into six harmonies." Furthermore, "able to..." below: because this mental consciousness comprehensively conditions everything and encompasses the three pramāṇas, it conditions both nominal and real dharmas. As said earlier: "It can make things of the present that have already passed suddenly come to mind, and unconsciously reckon and deliberate on things of the future." "Internal and external": internal faculties and external objects, form and mind dharmas; that is also reckoning self and what belongs to self.
