On the Śāstra's text from "Self-view" onward: Second, the afflictive obscuration. On the Commentary's "Four abodes": these are two among the six coarse marks. Why are they not correlated with the five consciousnesses? Because the five consciousnesses are the sentient beings who serve as the support, while unknowing and the four abodes are what belong to them. Here, taking these two, they directly obstruct faithful mind and the various contemplative wisdoms; hence they are singled out. The commentary text is likewise so. Why are both of the two obscurations named afflictions? Because the essence of both of these two obscurations is false, and their nature is noisy and vexing; they are not tranquil, so they are generally named afflictions.
