1. Under "compassionate practice":
[Śāstra:] "The Buddhas originally in the causal stage": refers to the various practices performed when they were bodhisattvas. Taking loving-kindness and compassion as the basis, there were none that did not put benefiting others first, gathering and transforming sentient beings. "The various pāramitās" downward means gathering them to adhere to oneself through the various perfections, transforming them to follow good. Gathering the impoverished with generosity, gathering the transgressors with holding precepts, and so forth: this applies to both self-benefit and other-benefit. Therefore the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra says: "Gathering the poor with limitless wealth, gathering the transgressors with pure observance of precepts, gathering the wrathful with disciplined practice of patience, gathering the indolent with great diligence, gathering the distracted with one-minded meditation, gathering the unwise with decisive wisdom."
