2. "Great vows":
[Commentary:] "The vast and great mind": this is the "sentient beings are boundless, I vow to deliver them" among the four universal vows. It also accords with the Buddha's command in the Vajracchedikā to those who give rise to the bodhimind to deliver universally the four modes of birth and nine classes. Maitreya's commentary also calls it "the vast and great mind". "The long-enduring mind": this is identical to what the Avataṃsaka's Bhadracarīpraṇidhāna says: "Only when the realm of sentient beings is exhausted will my practice be exhausted; because the realm of sentient beings is inexhaustible, my practice and vows are also inexhaustible." The former is discussed horizontally in terms of space; hence it says "equal to the realm of sentient beings". The latter is discussed vertically in terms of time; hence it says "exhausting the future".
