From "Answer" onward is the second: the answer, which has two parts: first, lamenting the difficulty of understanding. "Falling into the net of heterodoxy" means taking heterodoxy as orthodoxy; hence the Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: "If one takes it as superior understanding, one will succumb to the various heterodoxies." "Regressing from and losing roots of goodness" means taking orthodoxy as heterodoxy. Because both taking and leaving have faults, it is therefore difficult. It is like treading on fire and being burned, or seeing a jewel and not taking it: thus both are lost, and because they are lost, there is no day of progressing forward.
