Third, questions and answers to remove doubts: By what cause do these six kinds of defilement arise? Answer: The first three defilements arise with avidyā as cause and the objective realm as condition. The latter three attendant defilements arise with innate awakening as cause and fundamental avidyā as condition. That is to say, the entrenchment of avidyā can defile tathatā, forming the defiled mind. This is what was stated above: breaking the composite consciousness is due to extinguishing avidyā; extinguishing continuity is due to severing the defiled mind. Now, although the arising of avidyā and the defiled mind are before and after, their severance and extinction occur together at one time.
