The view of a personal self is also called grasping at a self. Relying on ignorance regarding a self, one gives rise to the view of a self; relying on the view of a self, one gives rise to self-love and self-pride; relying on loving the self, one calculates what belongs to a self; relying on calculating a self and what belongs to a self, one has greed toward what accords with it and anger toward what goes against it, giving rise completely to immeasurable defilements. Therefore, the view of a personal self is spoken of only with reference to ordinary beings. If one realizes the Hīnayāna fruit of a srotāpanna, then one eternally severs this mistaken attachment, let alone in the Mahāyāna.
