"What is cultivating the gate of morality? Lay bodhisattvas should stay away from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, frivolous talk, greed, anger, jealousy, flattery, deception, and wrong views. If one has gone forth, in order to subdue the afflictions, one should stay away from clamor, constantly rely on tranquility, and cultivate practices such as contentment and dhūta. Even for minor offenses, one gives rise to great dread in the mind, feels shame and remorse, rebukes oneself, and upholds the prohibitive precepts instituted by the Tathāgata, not allowing onlookers to have cause for ridicule or blame, and being able to cause sentient beings to abandon evil and cultivate good."
