Third, constantly submerged illustrates the external ordinary person. Emerging temporarily and submerging again illustrates the fivefold mental stabilities and the collective and distinct applications of mindfulness. Standing firm illustrates the mind of forbearance of the four virtuous states. Looking around in all directions illustrates the four fruits of śramaṇahood. Walking after looking around illustrates the pratyekabuddha, who, having contemplated the four noble truths, proceeds to enter into dependent origination. Standing firm after walking illustrates the bodhisattva: relinquishing afflictions, they are therefore termed 'walking'; for the sake of transforming sentient beings, they do not abandon the three realms of existence, and on this basis are termed 'standing firm'. Traversing both water and land illustrates the Tathāgata. (This completes the third gateway.)
