第四常沒，喻外凡夫。暫出還沒，喻五停心總別念處。住，喻燸等乃至大乘解行之人。言觀方者，喻於初地。觀已行者，喻二地上乃至七地。行已住者，喻八地上乃至十地。水陸俱行，喻於如來（此四門竟）。

Fourth, constantly submerged illustrates the external ordinary person. Emerging temporarily and submerging again illustrates the fivefold mental stabilities and the collective and distinct applications of mindfulness. Standing firm illustrates heat and the like, up to the person of understanding and practice in the Mahāyāna. As for looking around in all directions, it illustrates the first bhūmi. Walking after looking around illustrates the second bhūmi up to the seventh bhūmi. Standing firm after walking illustrates the eighth bhūmi up to the tenth bhūmi. Traversing both water and land illustrates the Tathāgata. (This completes the fourth gateway.)
