Question: If so, what is the difference between this and before-and-after condition-dependent constitution? Explanation: It is a single entity differentiated according to meaning. Taking the aspect of gathering particulars to constitute a composite, it is called condition-dependent constitution; taking the aspect of succession before and after, it is called continuity. Furthermore, in distinguishing them further, there is also a slight difference. What is the difference? Condition-dependent constitution is broad, while continuity is narrow. For instance, in the condition-dependent constitution of continuity, gathering twelve temporal hours constitutes one day; among the twelve hours, yin and shen correspond, and mao and you produce each other—though separated in time and not contiguous, they are able to harmonize and together constitute one day; therefore it is said to be broad. In the provisionality of continuity, although one also speaks of twelve temporal segments continuing to constitute one day, among them yin and shen, mao and you correspond across intervals of time and cannot be said to continue to constitute a day; only those that are adjacent can be said to continue; therefore it is called narrow. Such are their essential characteristics. (These two gates are concluded.)
