First, explaining the names. Śamatha, vipaśyanā, and upekṣā are also named in the sūtras as samādhi, prajñā, and upekṣā; these are differences within cultivation. Because the meanings of cultivation differ, one category speaks of three. As for śamatha: in foreign languages it is called śamatha; here it is translated as 'stopping' (śamatha). Guarding the mind to abide on its object and leaving behind distraction and agitation is therefore called 'stopping'. Stopping the mind so that it is not disordered is thus also called 'samādhi'. As for vipaśyanā: in foreign languages it is called vipaśyanā; here it is translated as 'contemplation' (vipaśyanā). Inquiring into and selecting dharmas is called 'contemplation'; contemplating and penetrating is designated 'prajñā'. As for upekṣā: in foreign languages it is called upekṣā; here it is translated as 'equanimity' (upekṣā). The mental activity being balanced and relinquishing one-sided habitual practice is therefore called 'equanimity' (this concludes the first heading).
