Tainted with respect to pure samādhi is also explained in three points: First, the number of conditions it possesses. Excluding the cause condition, it possesses the remaining three kinds. Second, distinction by stage. Within its own stage it fully possesses three conditions, and with respect to lower [stages] it is likewise. After a higher tainted mind, a lower pure samādhi arises to guard against retrogression from its own stage; therefore, with respect to lower pure [samādhi], it has the meaning of the immediate and dominant conditions. Based on lower pure samādhi, one trains in contemplating higher tainted [states] as the contemplation of suffering and its origin; therefore, higher-stage tainted [states] serve as the object condition for lower [stages]. With respect to higher pure samādhi, it can have the meaning of the object condition and dominant condition. What is the meaning of this? Another person's higher pure [state] takes my lower tainted [state] as an object to give rise to a mind of aversion, and therefore there is an object condition; my tainted [state] does not obstruct another person's higher pure [state], and therefore there is a dominant condition. Third, distinction by grades. Where it serves as a condition, there is no distinction among superior, middling, and inferior grades (this concludes these two sections).
