Tainted with respect to untainted [dhyāna] is also explained in three points: First, the number of conditions it possesses. There is only the meaning of the object condition and dominant condition; because it does not belong to its own class, there is no cause condition, and because it does not directly give rise to it, there is no immediate condition. Second, distinction by stage. With respect to that of the same stage, there are the object condition and dominant condition, and with respect to lower [stages] it is likewise. Higher-stage tainted samādhi serves as the cognitive object of suffering and its origin, and therefore there is an object condition; the higher does not obstruct the lower, and therefore there is a dominant condition. With respect to higher untainted [states] and lower untainted [states], they also fully possess the former two: my tainted [state] serves as the cognitive object of suffering and its origin for another person's higher untainted [state], and therefore there is an object condition; my tainted [state] does not obstruct another person's higher untainted [state], and therefore there is a dominant condition. Third, distinction by grades. Where it serves as a condition, there is no distinction among superior, middling, and inferior grades. The distinctions among conditions are as described.
