16.36

次明大小所為不同，亦得名為行利不同。小乘所修，偏為自利，心無廣兼，名之為小；菩薩所修，兼利自他，以兼利故目之為大。故《地經》說「不捨眾生修行道品，名護小乘（此九門竟）。」

Next, clarifying differences in what is aimed at between the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, which may also be named the difference in benefit of practice: what the Hīnayāna cultivates is biased toward self-benefit; the mind is not expansive or inclusive, and is therefore called "lesser." What the bodhisattva cultivates benefits both self and others; because it benefits both, it is termed "great." Therefore, the *Daśabhūmika-sūtra* states: "Cultivating the factors of the path without abandoning sentient beings is called protecting the lesser vehicle." (This concludes the ninth section.)
