Next is explaining the eightfold noble [path]. It is distinguished through four gates: first, explaining its name in general; second, determining its essence and constituents; third, dividing the three trainings; fourth, distinguishing according to the three wisdoms. What are the names? As for the "eightfold noble [path]," it begins with right view and extends up to right samādhi. These eight are termed the "path" because they are universally traversed; being free from deviation is called "right." Question: The preceding practices such as the seven factors of awakening are none of them called "right"; why is this alone termed so? Nāgārjuna explains: "When practicing the path and entering into the Dharma, one fears falling into deviation; therefore one must discuss 'right.'" Furthermore, this eightfold path is the beginning of entering sagehood and the inception of overturning deviation; the meaning of determining what is right is manifest, so it is particularly called "right." Such are the names and meanings (this concludes the first gate).
