Next is determining its essence and constituents. It is distinguished according to three meanings: First is distinguishing generally according to the stage of vision. These eight constitute the general stage of vision; as particular causes for the general, all can be termed factors. Within this gate, right view alone is both the path and a path factor: being the essence of the right path, it gets the name of "path"; constituting the general stage of vision, it is called a "path factor." The other seven are simply called path factors and not called the path: not being the essence of the right path, they are not called the path; constituting the general stage of vision, they are called path factors. Second is distinguishing them in mutual relation among the eight practices. Right view alone can simply be called the path and not a path factor: being the essence of the right path, it is called the "path"; distinguishing the essence from the constituents, it is not called a "factor." The other seven are simply called path factors and not called the path, the meaning of which is as explained before. Third is distinguishing with reference to the fruit. Bodhi is called the path; these eight serve as causes for the path, so they are all termed path factors (this concludes the second gate).
