Next, the third sub-section explains the amount of rebirths moistened by their afflictions. Herein, there are three detailed sub-sections of analysis: first, explaining whether the various afflictions do or do not moisten [rebirth]; second, explaining differences in employing afflictions to moisten rebirth; third, explaining the amount of rebirths moistened by the various afflictions. First, concerning whether the various afflictions do or do not moisten [rebirth]: some people proclaim that among the nine grades of afflictions, those that are in line to be severed cannot moisten rebirth, whereas those not in line to be severed are employed to moisten rebirth. This meaning is not so. If they have already been severed in line, they indeed might not moisten rebirth; but before they are severed, why would they not moisten [rebirth]? One should know that all of them equally can moisten rebirth. However, moistening is twofold: first, manifesting in activity to directly moisten rebirth; second, being possessed so as to secretly aid and nourish moistening. Before those that are in line to be severed have been severed, they can possess the function of secretly aiding and nourishing, and they can also possess the function of manifesting in activity to directly moisten. How can they have this? The meaning will be explained below. (This completes the first sub-section.)
