Next, explaining differences in employing afflictions to moisten rebirth. Among those nine grades of afflictions of cultivation, which ones manifest in activity to directly moisten rebirth? Which ones are possessed so as to nourish and moisten rebirth? Discussing them in sequence: the most superior coarse grade among all afflictions manifests in activity in dependence on conditions to directly moisten rebirth, while the remainder are all possessed to nourish and moisten rebirth. Discussing according to actual fact: afflictions arise without fixed order; the generating of karma and moistening of rebirth are not uniform by rule, and the superior, middling, and inferior of afflictions cannot be fixed. What does this mean? At the time of taking rebirth, someone of dull faculties may encounter an intense condition and give rise to an overarching fetter, then employing this fetter to directly moisten rebirth, with middling and inferior ones providing assistance. Someone of medium faculties may face a middling condition and give rise to a middling-grade fetter, then employing this fetter to directly moisten rebirth, with superior and inferior afflictions being possessed and assisting accordingly. Someone of sharp faculties may encounter a weak condition and give rise to an inferior-grade fetter, then employing this fetter to directly moisten rebirth, with superior and middling ones assisting accordingly. Those whose rebirth is produced by superior fetters definitely receive many bodies; those with middling fetters receive fewer; those with inferior fetters receive the fewest. For this reason, although the nine grades of afflictions of a srotāpanna are entirely unsevered, this does not prevent the number of rebirths taken from being unfixed. By this meaning, among the nine grades of afflictions, those that are due to be severed in line can also manifest in activity to moisten karma and receive rebirth. The assistance is completed. (This completes the second sub-section.)
