17.49

次約解心以別三位。心有三種：一事識心，所謂六識。二妄識心，謂第七識。三真識心，謂第八識。外凡位中，但依事識修習觀解，未有餘義。內凡位中，事識漸滅，妄識事中慧以漸現前。初地已上，妄識中慧以漸息滅，真識中慧以漸現前（此二門竟）。

Next is distinguishing the three stages in terms of the understanding mind. There are three kinds of mind: first, phenomenal consciousness, namely the six consciousnesses; second, deluded consciousness, namely the seventh consciousness; third, true consciousness, namely the eighth consciousness. In the stage of an outer ordinary person, one merely relies on phenomenal consciousness to cultivate contemplative understanding, without further meaning. In the stage of an inner ordinary person, phenomenal consciousness gradually ceases, and wisdom within deluded consciousness gradually manifests. From the first ground and above, wisdom within deluded consciousness gradually ceases, and wisdom within true consciousness gradually manifests (this concludes the second section).
