Next is distinguishing the three stages in terms of the understood dharmas. In the stage of an outer ordinary person, phenomenal consciousness has not perished; they see dharmas outside the mind, investigate and contemplate amidst dharmas outside the mind, and see suffering, impermanence, emptiness, non-self, and so forth, not understanding any other meaning. In the stage of an inner ordinary person, one calms the outer and returns to the inner, seeing that all dharmas merely arise from the mind and there are no dharmas outside the mind; because one sees that there are no distinct dharmas outside the mind, phenomenal consciousness gradually ceases; because one sees that all dharmas merely arise from the mind, the understanding of the seventh consciousness gradually manifests; when this understanding manifests, one sees that all dharmas merely manifest from deluded thoughts of one's own mind, like what is seen in a dream all arising from the mind with ultimately no dharmas. From the first ground and above, one calms delusion and reveals truth, seeing that all dharmas are merely the arising through condition of the true nature of the tathāgatagarbha, with no dharmas outside the true; although there is seeing, there is no conceptual differentiation; because there is no conceptual differentiation, deluded cognition gradually ceases and true virtue gradually manifests. Understood dharmas are like this (this concludes the third section).
