Next, the third gate distinguishes knowledge and severance. In a general and broad division, the second is severance and the remaining three are knowledge. According to specific and detailed division, the first two are one's own virtues, and the latter two benefit others. Within the preceding virtues of oneself, the first is knowledge and the second is severance. In benefiting others, seeking them directly from their names: being able to expound the obstructions to the path means explaining the obstructions to show them to others, causing people to sever them and enabling others to attain severance. Being able to expound the path of exhaustion means explaining the path to show it to others, causing others to practice and study, and enabling them to attain knowledge. According to the Dazhidulun, however, it is not like this. What does it say? Being able to expound the obstructions to the path causes others to recognize the obstructions, eliminate them, and attain the path; attaining the path is knowledge. Being able to expound the path of exhaustion causes others to recognize the path to the exhaustion of suffering and practice it to exhaust suffering; exhausting suffering is severance. Such are knowledge and severance. (This completes the three gates.)
