Next is the fourth section, distinguishing the two practices of benefiting oneself and benefiting others. Distinguishing them according to their specific aspects, the first two are benefiting oneself, and the latter two are benefiting others. Therefore the Bodhisattvabhūmi says: "Those first two kinds are the path of self-pacification, and the latter two kinds are the path of pacifying others." Discussing them comprehensively, all are benefiting oneself, because one's own mind is secure and has nothing to fear; comprehensively, they are also benefiting others, as stated in the Bodhisattvabhūmi. In terms of benefiting others, the first, [the fearlessness regarding being] omniscient, specifically transforms bodhisattvas, because bodhisattvas seek omniscience, and therefore it specifically transforms them. Hence the Bodhisattvabhūmi says: "The fearlessness of omniscience is for the sake of transforming the bodhisattvas of the Mahāyāna." The fearlessness regarding the exhaustion of all outflows specifically transforms [practitioners of] the two vehicles, because people of the two vehicles mostly seek quiescent cessation, and therefore it specifically transforms them. Hence the Bodhisattvabhūmi says: "The fearlessness of the exhaustion of outflows is for the sake of transforming śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas." The remaining two fearlessnesses universally transform both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. Practitioners of both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna universally seek to be free from obstructions; therefore [the Buddha] speaks of the obstructive dharmas to cause them to eliminate them. They universally seek the path of departure; therefore he speaks of the path of exhaustion to cause them to cultivate and train in it. Hence the Bodhisattvabhūmi says: "The Buddha spoke sūtras for śrāvakas and bodhisattvas practicing the path of departure from suffering. Those who compiled the scriptures compiled them into two piṭakas: speaking of the practices of all śrāvakas constitutes the Śrāvakapiṭaka, and expounding the practices of all bodhisattvas constitutes the Bodhisattvapiṭaka." The distinction between benefiting oneself and benefiting others is like this (this completes the fourth section).
