Next, differentiation according to the five destinies. The Vibhāṣā says that all ordinary persons obtain non-analytical cessation with respect to all five consciousnesses within the five destinies. What does this mean? Because wherever one's body may be, the five consciousnesses that would be produced in relation to the objects of the five dusts in all other places will never arise. As for the five dusts of this place, sentient beings of other places also cannot cognize them as objects, and therefore those five consciousnesses are also non-analytical cessation. Question: Why is mental consciousness not discussed? Because with respect to all objects in all places, each other's mental consciousnesses can cognize them mutually and they are not dharmas that will never arise; that is why it is not mentioned. Those who have already severed and separated from the portions of the evil destinies obtain non-analytical cessation. What practice can sever them? The treatise says: 'There are those who, by giving, observing precepts, hearing, reflecting, cultivating, the contemplation of impurity, mindfulness of breathing (ānāpāna-smṛti), and so forth, or by cultivating wisdom and practicing Heat and so forth, are able to sever the evil destinies and obtain non-analytical cessation.' Among these, obtaining cessation may be earlier or later and is not fixed. If one is autonomous, upon cultivating the former wholesome roots one immediately severs the evil destinies and obtains non-analytical cessation. Those of sharp faculties who are non-regressing are called autonomous. If one is of dull faculties, only upon reaching the mind of forbearance does one begin to obtain cessation. Question: As for the severed portions of the three evil destinies, does one obtain non-analytical cessation all at once, or does one obtain it gradually? Some declare that one obtains it all at once. The evaluator says: It is not fixed. If one cultivates the wholesome [practices] of giving, precepts, hearing, reflecting, and so forth, one obtains it where one is able to sever, but where one has not yet severed, one does not obtain it. If one cultivates the untainted wholesome roots of the aids to penetration and severs the evil destinies, one obtains non-analytical cessation with respect to the three evil destinies all at once. If there are those who can permanently sever the two destinies of humans and gods so as never to undergo them again, they obtain non-analytical cessation. The earlier and later among them will be discussed further in a later gate. Such is [the explanation] according to destinies. (This completes the fourth gate.)
